Southampton team news: Hasenhuttl expected to make big call after St. Mary's breakthrough

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl on the touchline

Journalist Tom Barclay expects Southampton striker Armando Broja to get the nod to start again when the team take on Burnley on Saturday.

The 20-year-old got his first start of the season last weekend against Leeds United, and he made the most of his opportunity by scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 victory.

How did Broja perform against Leeds?

Having joined from Chelsea on a season-long loan in August, Broja has had to wait patiently for game time under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The Saints have struggled for goals this term, with Adam Armstrong not finding the net since the opening day, and this led to the Austrian coach dropping him to the bench and bringing in Broja against Marcelo Bielsa's men.

Broja was a constant menace throughout the afternoon, managing to direct three of his five shots on target, and winning six aerial duels on his way to a WhoScored match rating of 8.07.

He capped off his performance by scoring eight minutes into the second half after Nathan Redmond found him inside the penalty area.

What has Barclay said about Broja?

Barclay was impressed by the 10-cap international, and thinks he will retain his place in the starting XI at St Mary's this weekend.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Broja took his chance, literally, and played well in the game. I do expect him to start against Burnley, and to kick on from here.”

Should Broja start against Burnley?

This could potentially be a big call for Hasenhuttl. Southampton spent £15m on Armstrong in the summer, and leaving him out of the starting line-up for two games on the trot could be a big blow to his confidence so early on in his career at the South Coast club.

With this in mind, Hasenhuttl may be tempted to bring him back into the team as quickly as possible.

How many games did Southampton win in the Premier League last season?

However, Broja looked a major threat against Leeds, and has earned another start based on his showing in that match.

Furthermore, Southampton are playing Burnley, a team who they could be in a battle with for survival this season. The manager cannot afford to pick Armstrong and hope that he comes good; he should select the players in the best form, and this means that Broja should be on the teamsheet once again for this weekend's crucial clash.
