Owen dismisses retirement claims

Manchester United striker Michael Owen has no intention of retiring from football at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old picked up a thigh problem during last week's Champions League clash against Otelul Galati, the latest in a long-line of injuries which have plagued his time at Old Trafford.

It's left plenty of critics questioning the forward's future not just with the Red Devils, but generally in football, and it's a theory which Owen has dismissed despite his current deal with the club expiring at the end of the season.

"I'm 31, so I'd still like to think I've got a few years left in me when you look at players like Giggsy," the former England international striker told SkySports News.

"And while they are playing in their mid to late-Thirties, that is great for us all, really. But I'd like to think I've got a few years left in me and I still love the game. How can't you love it when you are playing for such a top club like Manchester United."

Owen's has been hampered by injuries throughout his career, suffering hamstring problems after bursting on the scene at Liverpool before an £8 million move to Real Madrid in 2004.

After a slow start at the Santiago Bernabeu, he quickly found form for Los Blancos, scoring 18 goals in all competitions despite making just 15 starts for the La Liga outfit.

A return to the Barclays Premier League followed in 2005, with Owen joining Newcastle United despite speculation he would return to Liverpool. A broken metatarsal and anterior cruciate ligament damage were just two problems during four years at St. James' Park, which ended when the Toon were relegated to the Npower Championship.

Ferguson swooped for the striker in a shock free transfer move back in 2009, and whilst injuries have again caused the player problems, there have been some memorable highs including the winner against Manchester City in a 4-3 classic.
