St. Mary's news: Southampton fans 'will be fearing the worst' ahead of Saturday

Journalist Tom Barclay reckons that Southampton fans attending their game against Burnley on Saturday will be "fearing the worst" following their poor recent record against the Clarets.

The Saints picked up their first victory of the campaign against Leeds last weekend but have beaten Sean Dyche's men just twice in their previous nine meetings dating back to January 2017.

What's Southampton's record against Burnley like?

Despite Barclay saying that the St Mary's faithful might be expecting the worst, they actually did the league double over Burnley last season, winning 1-0 at Turf Moor back in September and then 3-2 on home soil in April.

But prior to those two wins, the Lancashire outfit were definitely seen as a bogey team to Southampton, who'd collected just three points from a possible 21 available before last season's two successes.

In truth, that record shouldn't come as a great surprise considering Burnley have actually finished above them three times in the last four years, with the exception being last time and Southampton only finished four points ahead of Dyche's side on that occasion.

The gap right now between the teams is still four points, but with the Clarets yet to taste victory in the Premier League this season, Barclay reckons that Southampton supporters will be fearing another bad result coming their way.

What did Barclay say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "I feel like I've done two maybe three games against Burnley and they've pretty much lost every time.

"They just seem to turn it on. Vydra, an inconsistent player at Premier League level, scoring an absolute worldie a couple of years ago.

"They're struggling from set-pieces Southampton, and all Southampton fans going to the game will be fearing the worst based on what's happened before."

What's likely to happen between Southampton and Burnley?

Southampton will be heavy favourites to make it consecutive league victories this weekend.

Not only have Ralph Hasenhuttl's side been strong at home this season, conceding just once and losing once in four matches, but Burnley have collected one point from a possible 12 on their travels and have scored five goals all season.

What shirt number does Nathan Redmond wear for Southampton?

Burnley were handed a tough fixture list, but their goalless draw against Norwich earlier this month spoke volumes about where Dyche's men currently are as a team, registering just four shots on target against the rock-bottom Canaries.

But as Barclay alluded to, if there's any ground that the Clarets are likely to be at their best, it's St Mary's, and Southampton will be fully aware of the threat.
