This weekend's Emilia-Romagna MotoGP will certainly be a poignant occasion for Valentino Rossi, with the Doctor set to embark on his final home race of his career as the curtain begins to close on his time in the sport.

Rossi announced earlier this year that this season would be his last in motorcycling's premier class with him currently enduring what has been a tough campaign on his Yamaha.

Indeed, it's not gone how he would have liked his last season to, nor has it gone how the many fans of his would have liked either, but sometimes that is sport and you can at least say the Italian legend has certainly had his fair share of ups during his time, winning 7 top class world titles along the way.

The 42-year-old, then, takes to the Misano circuit for the final time this weekend in what will be the final home race of his career, and he's offered these thoughts ahead of the occasion:

"It’s a long story. It’s more than 400 races and a long career. I just have to say thank you to everybody because I have an incredible support all over the world; especially in Italy, but all over the world more or less.

"I always give the maximum and we enjoyed a lot together because it’s a long career with a lot of great races.

"So, we will see on Sunday and after Misano we will have another two races. It’s always a sad moment when you arrive at the end, but anyway, it was good, we enjoyed it together."

MotoGP races on into November with meetings in the Algarve and Valencia still to come before we rubber-stamp the 2021 season and Rossi is bound to get a huge send-off at both circuits even if they're not in his home country.

A true legend of the sport, let's just hope these final three races can provide some air of success for the great man to go out on.
