Leeds United target Todd Cantwell is rated higher outside of current club Norwich City despite impressing in his first Premier League season, according to LeedsLive journalist Joe Donnohue.

The winger has missed the last four fixtures for his current employers, meaning he has been restricted to three Premier League starts this season.

What's the latest news involving Cantwell?

Cantwell's current contract, worth £25,000-per-week, is set to expire in less than 12 months but has the option of being extended by another year.

Despite the uncertainty over Cantwell's future, Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth claimed, via LeedsLive, that Norwich were only willing to sell their academy product if an offer of up to £50million had been lodged during the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old was tracked by Leeds before the deadline passed and reports suggest Marcelo Bielsa's side tabled a bid worth £15million last month.

However, he could be available on a free transfer if he fails to agree a new Carrow Road deal and Leeds would not be the only side coveting Cantwell, with Aston Villa among those to have held an interest in recent times.

Although Cantwell has not been a regular starter for Daniel Farke's Norwich side this season, he has scored six goals in 42 Premier League appearances for the Canaries.

What has Joe Donnohue said about Cantwell?

Cantwell has already missed more top flight fixtures this season than in the last campaign when Norwich were in the Premier League as he was ruled out of just one game during the 2019/20 campaign due to suspension.

Donnohue believes Cantwell could prove to be an impressive signing for Leeds, where he would be appreciated more than at his current club.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: "I think the opinion of Todd Cantwell is higher outside of Norwich than it is at Norwich, from what I've gauged.

"He obviously had that start to the 2019/20 season with Norwich, before they were relegated, and set the Premier League alight.

"He wasn't as prominent as Teemu Pukki of Emi Buendia in the Championship when they were promoted."

Why has Cantwell been unavailable for Norwich?

Prior to yesterday's clash with Chelsea, Farke confirmed Cantwell remains out of his plans due to wanting more from the winger on the training pitch and following a spell away for personal reasons.

The four-time England under-21 international started the first three matches of the season but has not featured in the first XI since.

His lack of action comes despite making 34 appearances last term, with Cantwell playing a key role as Norwich won a second Championship title in three seasons.
