Lionel Messi: Dimitri Payet breezed past PSG star with some stoppage-time skills

Dimitri Payet is on fire this season!

Lionel Messi got his first taste of 'Le Classique' last Sunday evening.

The Argentine maestro played the full 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille at the Stade Velodrome.

PSG will be happy to have emerged from the fixture with a point, because they spent most of the second half playing with 10 men.

Summer signing Achraf Hakimi was shown a straight red card in the 57th-minute for a last-man foul and that incident looked as if would tip the game in Marseille's favour.

But the home side couldn't capitalise and they were only able to muster one shot on target throughout the entirety of the match.

That really isn't good enough and the likes of Dimitri Payet and Arkadiusz Milik will be rather annoyed with themselves over the fact they were unable to really test Keylor Navas in the PSG goal.

Payet did at least get the better of Messi on one occasion, though.

Messi & Payet in action

Deep into stoppage-time, the former West Ham United playmaker - who's been on fire for Marseille this season - had the PSG superstar's head spinning in the middle of the park.

Payet robbed Messi of the ball near the halfway line and then bamboozled him with an excellent display of skill and close control.

Well played, Dimitri.

As we mentioned earlier, Payet has been in supreme form in a Marseille shirt so far this season and it's been glorious to watch.

In his seven Ligue 1 appearances, the 34-year-old has scored five goals and contributed four assists.

That's a mighty impressive record for an attacking midfielder and Payet's renaissance has been part of the reason why Jorge Sampaoli's side have been so impressive for much of 2021/22.
