US Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton reflects on late charge and being pipped by Max Verstappen

A grandstand finish to the US Grand Prix was provided on Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton duelled it out for victory in the final laps of the race.

Hamilton had seized the early advantage from the Red Bull man with a better start off of the line, with him assuming the lead after the first corner, but Verstappen's better pace meant that after the first set of pit-stops the Mercedes man was back in second.

Indeed, try as he might, the reigning champ would not get back past his title rival for the remainder of the race, with a late surge to put Verstappen under pressure ultimately falling short of what he wanted; the race victory.

Verstappen, then, extends his lead in the championship standings but Hamilton won't be giving up just yet, with him reflecting post-race on that late charge and looking ahead to the challenges to come in the final five Grands Prix:

“Firstly, congratulations to Max, he did a brilliant job today,” said Hamilton. “And also, a big thank you to the amazing crowd we’ve had in Austin all weekend, to perform in front of such packed grandstands and passionate fans has been a real honour.

“I really thought for a second we might be able to win, I gave it absolutely everything out there. It was such a tough race, but unfortunately, we couldn’t convert it. Red Bull just had the upper hand, and we couldn’t match them.

“It looked like they had a better and more stable rear end on their car, with less sliding. The start was obviously great and closing the gap towards the end, but I got into the dirty air and the tyres overheated in the last few laps.

“Thank you to the team for amazing pit stops and so much hard work over the weekend. We didn’t quite get it this time, but we’ll move onto the next one.”

Formula 1 fans have been spoiled for choice so far this season in terms of their favourite race and this was another engrossing affair.

Verstappen dealt with the hard-charging Hamilton well as the pair exchanged fastest laps in the final stages and now it's on to Mexico in a couple of weeks from now.
