Antonio Conte is reportedly open to replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager.

This is according to the Manchester Evening News [MEN], who understand that Conte would want reassurances from United before accepting the job.

Solskjaer is under severe pressure following United’s shocking 5-0 defeat at home to fierce rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils found themselves 4-0 down at half-time following goals from Naby Keita, Diogo Jota and a Mohamed Salah brace.

Salah then completed his hat-trick early in the second half before United were reduced to 10 men when substitute Paul Pogba was shown a straight red card.

United were in danger of being humiliated in the final half-hour but, fortunately for Solskjaer and his players, Liverpool took their foot off the gas during the closing stages of the match.

The sight of thousands of fans leaving Old Trafford 25 minutes before the final whistle may have been enough to convince Man Utd’s board that a change in management is necessary.

The club have been completely behind Solskjaer since the club legend replaced Jose Mourinho in December 2018, but the manner of Sunday’s defeat was unacceptable.

Things could yet get worse for United, who face Tottenham (A), Atalanta (A) and Manchester City (H) before the next international break.

Gary Neville: Conte not a good fit for Man Utd

Former United captain Gary Neville said on Sky Sports over the weekend that he doesn’t believe Conte would be a good fit for the Red Devils.

"They won’t bring a hitman in. They will stick with Ole and he has to win something this season. Any other club he’d be in trouble tonight [Sunday]," Neville told Sky Sports, per the MEN.

"Jose was the best manager in the world and couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t bring Conte in to United. He’s not a fit for United.

"I might be wrong but I don't think that he is. I think it would be wrong to sack Ole today. I sacked a manager after six games last season, it was the wrong thing to do, I should’ve let things breathe."

However, an increasing number of United fans (on social media, at least) feel that Conte has the winning mentality required to turn their star-studded squad into title contenders.

What reassurances does Conte want from Man Utd?

The MEN have been told by sources that Conte would want reassurances over the direction United are currently heading in.

Furthermore, he would not entertain the idea of having ‘marketable’ players ‘foisted onto him’.

Conte won the 2016-17 Premier League title with Chelsea, as well as the FA Cup the following season, before moving to Inter Milan and delivering the Italian club their first Scudetto since the 2009-10 campaign.
