Manchester United endured a day to forget on Sunday as their recent struggles plummeted to a harrowing new low.

Under the disbelieving gaze of Sir Alex Ferguson, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side slumped to one of the club's biggest ever defeats.

The fact that that humiliation came at the hands of bitter rivals Liverpool, was just the rotten cherry on top of an incredibly underwhelming cake.

Shipping five goals at home is an absolute crime for any Manchester United side, but to do it against Liverpool is nothing short of a travesty.

Naturally, as the final whistle echoed around an emptying Old Trafford, attentions shifted to the future of the embattled Solskjaer, as pressure continues to mount on the manager.

Opinion is split over Ole, with many believing he should be given more time to let his squad bed in, while others believe his time has come and he needs to be shown the door.

But, were he to be given the sack, who would replace him in the hot-seat at the Theatre of Dreams?

Well, in a bid to answer that exact question, we have gone ahead and ranked 15 of the potential favourites (according to bookmakers) using a handy Tiermaker.

Ranking potential Solskjaer replacements

Give him the job

Zinedine Zidane is favourite among the bookmakers to replace Solskjaer and it's not hard to see why.

The Real Madrid legend has quite the CV from what is a relatively short managerial career. He would come neatly wrapped with a winning aura and has the potential to get the best out of what is a talented squad.

Great shout

Erik ten hag
Brendan Rodgers
Mauricio Pochettino
Antonio Conte
Massimiliano Allegri

All of the above candidates are more than capable managers but, of the five, Antonio Conte would feel like the best bet.

The likes of Rodgers and Ten Hag would represent a calculated risk while the odds of landing Pochettino, who United are long term admirers, are slim at the moment.

Neither here nor there

Ralph Hassenhuttl
Graham Potter
Julen Lopetegui
Luis Enrique

This gaggle of managers would represent a bit of an underwhelming stab in the dark from the hierarchy at United were they to go with one of them.

Now don't get us wrong, they're all very handy managers, but right now, do they have what it takes to hold the reigns at United?

We have our doubts.

Stay well clear

Joachim Low
Michael Carrick
Eddie Howe

A number of top English clubs have flirted with the idea of bringing in Eddie Howe but you can't help but feel that it would be a dreadful error in judgement for United.

Carrick, meanwhile, lives and breathes the club, but his lack of experience in a top role simply rules him out for us.

Despite his remarkable CV, Low and Man United just doesn't feel like something that would click.

Never going to happen

Julian Nagelsmann
Cristiano Ronaldo

In truth, Nagelsmann would be the perfect candidate but it would take an almighty crowbar to wrench him away from Bayern Munich at the moment.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, despite being one of the favourites with the bookies, would represent a sizeable gamble, something the United hierarchy have become desperate to avoid in recent years.
