Shakur Stevenson has sensationally called out Oscar Valdez after stopping Jamel Herring in the tenth round at the State Farm Arena on Saturday night.

Stevenson, 24, and Herring, 35, are former training partners who used to train together at the same gym with trainer Brian McIntyre.

But the former US Marine had no answer for the young challenger's fast hands as he quickly fell behind on the scorecards before the referee stopped the fight at 1 minute 30 seconds of the tenth round.

Stevenson unsurprisingly was ahead on all three of the judges' scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

Following his win, Stevenson said: "There's only one fight left, the biggest fight in the division.

"Oscar can't keep ducking! It's time to fight!

"Me versus Oscar, there is nothing else to look forward to.

"The 130lbs division needs to unify, so let's get it."

Shakur Stevenson stopped Jamel Herring in the tenth round

Going into the fight, despite his relative inexperience, Stevenson was viewed as the favourite. Herring on the other hand had won seven fights in a row and the New York native was coming off a one-sided sixth-round TKO victory over Northern Ireland boxing legend Carl Frampton.

After Stevenson made easy work of Herring, he made a beeline straight for Timothy Bradley Jr, and decided to give the outspoken critic a taste of his own medicine.

"I want to be a superstar in the sport," he added.

"I take my craft seriously, I am disciplined, I had a strong camp.

"I want to thank Tim Bradley who criticised me and called me boring.

"So I wanted to perform in a fun fight - to show my skills, my defence, my power. I showed everything.

"Around the fifth round, I had landed everything and was winning clearly.

"Then he tried to come on. I thought: 'I will take a break then step it up later'."

Oft criticised for hesitating to pull the trigger, there could be no such criticism this time. Stevenson showed a maturity beyond his years by methodically breaking down the durable Herring bit by bit and when he saw the opportunity he pounced.

"I smelled blood," he explained.

"I thought: 'I have to touch the cut'.

"Every punch I threw, I thought 'touch the cut, touch the cut' just to make the doctor stop it."
