Tottenham latest news: Spurs mistake over £18.5m transfer deal

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Nuno Espirito Santo

Tottenham Hotspur should have won the race to sign Odsonne Edouard during the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge.

Spurs dropped to sixth place in the Premier League table after West Ham United condemned Nuno Espirito Santo's side to a fourth defeat of the campaign at the weekend.

What's the latest news involving Edouard?

Edouard agreed terms on a deal worth £70,000-per-week plus bonuses when he joined Crystal Palace in a switch which could end up being worth £18.5million a matter of hours before the deadline passed at the end of August.

The striker always looked likely to leave Scottish giants Celtic after he made it clear he was vying for a transfer by changing agents at the turn of the year as he bid to force through a move.

Edouard headed to the Premier League after scoring 86 goals in 179 appearances for Celtic, where he won nine trophies and was the Scottish Premiership's leading marksman on two occasions.

The 23-year-old, who is also the France under-21s' top goalscorer of all-time, took his impressive form to Selhurst Park as he bagged a brace in a six-minute debut appearance against Spurs.

Having put one north London club to the sword, he grabbed his third goal in five outings when Palace were made to settle for a draw at Arsenal last week before firing a blank against Newcastle United on Saturday.

What has Michael Bridge said about Edouard?

Although Spurs spent £57.1million on bolstering their squad during the summer window, Harry Kane is the club's only senior striker ahead of the transfer market reopening for business in January.

It comes after Spurs opted against taking up the option of turning Carlos Vinicius' season-long loan move from Portuguese side Benfica into a permanent switch worth £36million.

Bridge believes Edouard could have been the perfect back-up option to Kane.

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Tottenham don't have that second striker on the bench, like they had with Vinicius.

"I look at Odsonne Edouard, who scored at Arsenal last week, and he wasn't expensive at all.

"Would he have been a guy to take off the bench?"

How have Spurs performed in front of goal this season?

It would appear as though Spurs could have done with another striking option in their squad as they have failed to find the back of the net three times in nine Premier League outings, with the 1-0 loss to West Ham being the latest setback.

Spurs managed to keep England captain Harry Kane at the club despite the frontman publicly stating he was looking to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the summer.

However, he has only grabbed one top flight goal since, with that coming in the win over Newcastle United earlier this month.
