Leeds latest news: 'High hopes' for teenage Elland Road trio after Marcelo Bielsa call

Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa

There are high hopes for Leeds United trio Joe Gelhardt, Charlie Cresswell and Crysencio Summerville to challenge for regular spots in the senior squad after enjoying their first taste of Premier League action, according to LeedsLive journalist Joe Donnohue.

Boss Marcelo Bielsa made a big call on Saturday by opting to bring Gelhardt and Summerville off the bench as the Whites battled back to secure a point against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

What’s the latest news involving the trio?

Bielsa has been forced into tinkering with his team in recent weeks due to a host of key players – such as Raphinha, Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips – spending time on the sidelines.

That has allowed youngsters to profit, with 19-year-olds Gelhardt, Cresswell and Summerville being handed their Premier League debuts since the campaign got underway.

Gelhardt featured in the top flight for the first time at Southampton earlier this month and followed that up with another substitute appearance against Wolves, where he won a stoppage time penalty after a lung-bursting run was only ended thanks to a Nelson Semedo foul.

Summerville has come off the bench in four of Leeds’ last five Premier League fixtures as Bielsa has given the winger a chance to make an impact.

Cresswell, meanwhile, played the full 90 minutes at centre-half but was unable to stop the Yorkshire club from being condemned to a late defeat by West Ham United last month.

Donnohue has confirmed leading figures within the club believe the trio are destined to have impressive careers.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “There’s quite a few who there are high hopes for.

“Gelhardt, Cresswell and Summerville, in particular, and they have all made first-team appearances this season.”

Did Luke Ayling score on his Premier League debut for Leeds United?

Have they earned praise from elsewhere?

Gelhardt broke a record after entering the fray against Wolves, with him taking more touches in the opposition box than any other player to come off the bench in a Premier League clash as late as the 62nd minute since Opta began recording the data.

Match of the Day’s Gary Lineker and Martin Keown, via HITC, praised Gelhardt after his game-changing cameo appearance.

Centre-half Cresswell was hailed by Leeds fans following his Premier League debut against West Ham and Summerville is already valued at £1.35million by Transfermarkt.
