Tottenham latest news: Forgotten £9m star could get even more out of Cristian Romero

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge wants to see Joe Rodon partner Cristian Romero at the heart of Tottenham‘s defence.

But the Welshman is yet to start in the Premier League this season, with Romero, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez all preferred by Nuno Espirito Santo.

What’s the latest news with Rodon?

When Rodon, 6ft4, made the £11m switch from Swansea on deadline day last October, it appeared a strange signing by Jose Mourinho, who had been chasing the signature of Milan Skriniar for the majority of the window.

It soon became evident that Rodon was going to be nothing more than a back-up and was only going to play in the domestic cups having not been named in the Europa League squad.

Rodon would make eight Premier League starts last season and despite Spurs performing awfully in a defensive sense for the last 15 months, the 24-year-old has still struggled for opportunities.

His only league outing of the season came when he replaced Dier off the bench at Crystal Palace and despite the 3-0 scoreline, the Wales international did little wrong.

Rodon has since been demoted to essentially a Europa Conference League player having started all three group stage matches.

But with no clean sheets in five Premier League matches, including the 1-0 defeat at West Ham, Bridge wants to see Rodon start alongside Romero, who was Spurs’ second-best outfield player at the London Stadium behind Dier.

What did Bridge say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Rodon is one of quite a few Spurs players that are playing more for their country than their club.

“You get the impression that Nuno won’t have him as first choice, but I think Rodon and Romero would be a good partnership.”

Have Rodon and Romero played together previously?

With Rodon now essentially a Conference League player and Romero a near certainty to start in in the Premier League, it’s going to be difficult for these two to build up a relationship.

Did Tottenham Hotspur sign Moussa Sissoko on transfer deadline day in 2016?

But they did play 90 minutes together in the victory over Mura last month and whilst the quality of opposition needs to be taken into consideration, they’ve at least experienced playing alongside each other.

That might not count for much moving forward, but if Tottenham continue struggling at the back, Rodon’s chance might come sooner rather than later.
