Harry Maguire: Rafael van der Vaart's 2019 comments go viral again after Man Utd 0-5 Liverpool

Rafael van der Vaart slated Harry Maguire back in 2019

Harry Maguire has had his fair share of critics since signing for Manchester United.

In 2019, the Red Devils splashed out £80m on Maguire, making him the most expensive defender in football history.

Many believed United had paid over the odds for the defender and he soon drew criticism for his performances.

Maguire answered his critics with a brilliant campaign for England at Euro 2020.

He was superb as The Three Lions made the final. His performances saw him named in the team of the tournament.

But he has been unable to perform at that level for United at the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

He was widely criticised once again as United were thrashed 5-0 by Liverpool on the weekend.

The English defender has been slated for his performance and, on the back of another poor display, Rafael van der Vaart's past comments about him have gone viral once again.

Back in 2019, before Maguire had even kicked a ball for United, the Dutchman spoke about his transfer to United while live on Sky Sports.

And he wasn't very complimentary at all.

He said: "It's funny because we [Holland] were in the Nations League against England. I was working for the Dutch television. I remember we were saying: 'Harry Maguire... he was by far the worst player on the pitch.'

"And then two months later... £80 million! Unbelievable."

Van der Vaart then looked confused when Jamie Redknapp said he had 'good technique'. Watch the moment below...

That hasn't been the only time that Van der Vaart has slated Maguire.

Two months later, after the United captain's performance against Liverpool, he said, per Goal: "If he is worth so much money, Virgil van Dijk is worth £300m.

"If I am going to play with the amateurs on Sunday afternoon, I can easily find three who can do this (what Maguire does on the pitch). I mean that seriously. A bit silly to say, but I really think so."

While in July 2020, on Dutch TV station Ziggo, Van der Vaart said, per talkSPORT: "I think Maguire goes home every day and tells his wife: ‘I screw up, but I earn so much. They really believe I’m good.’ I really think so, he laughs at everyone."

We would love to see what the Dutchman thought of Maguire's performance on Sunday...
