The shock return of Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United over the summer was greeted with wild enthusiasm by Red Devils fans. One man who surely knew that the second coming of Ronaldo to Old Trafford was not a good sign for him personally, however, was Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan striker notched 17 goals in 39 appearances for United last term, but the considerable presence of five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo at the Theatre of Dreams this season meant it was inevitable that the former Paris Saint-Germain frontman would struggle for regular minutes this time around.

The 34-year-old has started just one of United's nine Premier League games in the current campaign but has maintained a regular presence on the bench for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Despite scoring a couple of crucial winning goals in the Champions League over the last month, Ronaldo hasn't found the net in the Premier League for a total of four games now.

The reality of the fact that the Portuguese superstar is no longer at the peak of his powers has become increasingly obvious to United supporters as the club has struggled for form domestically in recent weeks.

A compilation of Cavani's highlights from last season has recently popped up on social media, serving as a timely reminder of just how consistently impressive Cavani was for United just a few short months ago.

Including all of his best strikes from the 2020/21 campaign, the video package has a number of fans questioning whether Cavani would be a better fit for United right now than Ronaldo.

Ronaldo or Cavani? Supporters feel the Uruguayan deserves more opportunity at United

The overall reaction to Cavani's best bits from last season was that the striker deserves more game time - with some comments suggesting he should be given a run as United's first-choice frontman.

"Is it too far to say that Cavani does more on the field than Ronaldo does at this point? Probably not," suggested a first comment.

"And this guy is always on the bench? Surreal," read a second response.

"I'm not kidding when I say Ronaldo squanders half those of those chances," declared a further reply.

"Needs to start Saturday," advised one United fan, keen to see Cavani start for the Red Devils at Tottenham this weekend.

Cavani with Man Utd

"It's mad that you can perform like this one season and get benched the next - all because of a name," pointed out a final supporter, referring to Ronaldo replacing Cavani in the United starting XI.

Let's be honest about it. Cavani stands little to no chance of outright regaining his place from Ronaldo at present, such is the influence of the Portuguese at the club.

With that said, Cavani is still an exceptional talent who could be a great asset to United if given a chance. Whether Solskjaer can accommodate both men within his side is a question only he knows the answer to.

Cavani would undoubtedly be a popular inclusion on the United team sheet though.
