How does the Euro 2022 draw work?

As hosts, England have been placed in position one of Group A. This means they will play in the tournament's opening match.

The 15 other teams have been ordered based on their national team coefficient rankings, which are derived from performances in past international tournaments as well as UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 qualifying.

Ahead of the draw, the 15 remaining teams are put into four seeding pots with each group containing one side from each seeded section.

Finally, the teams are drawn a position in the group to confirm what order they will play their fixtures.

After all that, the fixture list for next summer will be complete.

Could England win the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022?

In her GiveMeSportWomen Column, Lucy Bronze admitted England believe they can win the Euros next summer.

“Under Sarina, the Netherlands won the Euros and reached a World Cup final. That’s the success we want with England. We’ve got high hopes,” Bronze said.

Make no mistake, England would have to beat some very established sides including Sweden, Germany and, of course, defending champions the Netherlands - all of whom are likely to reach the knockout stages.

Yet, England have shown immense improvement under Sarina Wiegman already and could certainly find their way to the tournament's latter stages.

From there, well, anything could happen.

What about Northern Ireland's chances at UEFA Women's Euro 2022?

The other home nation, Northern Ireland, are the lowest ranked side in the tournament's draw.

Despite this, they frustrated England in a goalless first-half at Wembley last week. If it wasn't for Beth Mead, they may have left Wembley with a point or more.

With the return of a few star players, they will hope to spring a surprise or two next summer.

Getting out of the group-stages would be some achievement, however.
