US Women’s National Team icons Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan combined to score a scintillating goal against South Korea last night as Vlatko Andonovski’s side ran out comfortable 6-0 winners.
Rapinoe and Morgan are two of the USA’s most revered players of all time. Morgan has scored 115 goals for the national team and won back-to-back World Cups, while Rapinoe achieved the same feat and won the Golden Ball at the 2019 tournament in France.
Together the pair have accumulated a total of 377 caps and have combined to score countless goals over the years.
Morgan’s strike last night though was up there with the best and has been described on social media as a “thing of beauty.”
In the 69th minute, with the US 2-0 to the good, Rapinoe picked up the ball on the left flank, before threading an inch-perfect pass with the outside of her right foot into the path of Morgan. The Orlando Pride forward then made no mistake with the finish, slotting the ball through the legs of the South Korea keeper.
As you’d expect, fans were quick to laud the pair, with some emphasising that they are two of the greatest women’s footballers of all time.
“The best female players I have ever watched,” said one supporter.
While Rapinoe and Morgan are two legends of the game, it was another US Icon, Carli Lloyd, who stole the headlines.
Lloyd was playing in her final ever game for the national side, having announced her retirement earlier this year.
Across a remarkable career, the US star has played 316 games –– the second most in US history and scored 134 goals.
The forward started last night’s game alongside the likes of Sophia Smith and Catarina Macario –– two players who weren’t even born when Lloyd made her professional debut.
At almost 40 years of age, Lloyd has scored 11 international goals this year, but she was unable to add to this tally last night, despite coming close on more than one occasion.
She was eventually replaced by Morgan in the 66th minute and received a rapturous reception from the crowd. Almost every member of the US side rushed over to hug Lloyd, who was visibly emotional as she left the field.
“To just feel the love and support from so many people, I am incredibly gracious,” Lloyd said afterwards. “Tonight was one of the best closings of a career I could have ever asked for.”
Following Morgan’s sublime third goal, Rapinoe added a fourth in the 85th minute, before Rose Lavelle and Lynn Williams capped off a fine performance by the World Champions. The sNews Now - Sport News
