Newcastle transfer news: Timescale given for when Magpies could secure Jesse Lingard deal

Manchester United's Jesse Lingard has been linked with Newcastle United

Newcastle United will not be in a position to entice Jesse Lingard to Newcastle United for another year, according to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge.

The Magpies have been rumoured to be tracking a host of big names since a £305million takeover led by the Public Investment Fund resulted in Mike Ashley's 14-year reign as the club's owner coming to an end earlier this month.

What's the latest news involving Lingard?

Lingard - along with Manchester United team-mates Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and Eric Bailly - is among the names to have been linked with a potential move to St James' Park.

It comes at a time when Lingard's future is uncertain, with the midfielder's £75,000-per-week Old Trafford contract set to expire next summer.

However, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still hoping to see Lingard commit his long-term future to the club by penning an extended deal.

The 28-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United and it was at the London Stadium where he returned to the limelight, scoring nine goals and grabbing a further five assists in 16 appearances.

Although Hammers chief David Moyes was keen to sign Lingard on a permanent basis, he was unable to strike a deal before the summer transfer deadline passed as the midfielder chose to remain at Old Trafford.

What has Michael Bridge said about Lingard?

Bridge believes it will be difficult for Newcastle's new owners to persuade Lingard to move to St James' Park when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Sky Sports reporter feels Lingard will not be interested in joining a Magpies side which currently finds itself in the Premier League's relegation zone.

Bridge told GIVEMESPORT: "We all know in a few years' time that Newcastle - if they get over Financial Fair Play, which I'm assuming they will - could be a totally different team but I think it will take them a long time.

"They're still a dreadful football team. Let's see who they appoint. Will he be a big name to entice the likes of Lingard?

"I still don't think Newcastle are in a position to entice Lingard yet. I could be wrong but I think we're still a year away from that."

How has Lingard performed so far this season?

Lingard opted to remain at Manchester United beyond the summer transfer window as he wanted to break back into Solskjaer's plans, but he is still waiting to make his first Premier League start of the campaign.

However, he has still found a way of making a telling impact, with him grabbing goals against Newcastle and West Ham.

Lingard is still getting opportunities at international level, with him winning his 32nd England cap by starting the World Cup qualifier against Andorra earlier this month.
