Barcelona have sacked Ronald Koeman.

A 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday evening was the final straw for Koeman, who endured a miserable start to the 2021/22 season.

Barcelona have won just four of their first 10 games in La Liga and the 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano left them in ninth place in the table.

Things haven't gone any better in the Champions League, where Barcelona started their campaign with back-to-back 3-0 defeats in the group stage.

Messi papered over the cracks

Koeman has been in a precarious position since the summer and his job was made even more difficult by the departure of Lionel Messi.

It's becoming even more clear now just how important Messi was to this side. Without him, they're incapable of challenging for major trophies.

Radamel Falcao's goal for Rayo Vallecano consigned Koeman to his fate and Memphis Depay's missed penalty only served to rub salt in the wounds.

Barcelona sack Koeman

“FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach," a statement from Barcelona read.

"The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.

"FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career."

Could Xavi replace Koeman?

Their attentions will now turn to Koeman's replacement.

Barcelona's former midfielder Xavi is doing an impressive job in Qatar with Al-Sadd and he would be a very popular choice with the club's supporters.
