Oleksandr Usyk won’t make the same mistakes Andy Ruiz Jr made against Anthony Joshua

Oleksandr Usyk has insisted he will not make the same mistakes as Andy Ruiz Jr when he fights Anthony Joshua for a second time in the early part of next year.

The Ukrainian, 34, ripped up the script last month when he produced a sublime performance to outpoint Joshua over 12 rounds at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Usyk will put his newly acquired belts on the line when he rematches AJ in the spring.

Ruiz Jr came in 15 pounds heavier for his rematch with Joshua in Saudi Arabia in December 2019, but Usyk is adamant he will not suffer the same fate as the Mexican.

When asked if he has been enjoying a rather modest celebration, Usyk told the Daily Mail: “That’s absolutely correct.

“I’m not going to celebrate it like Andy Ruiz did!”

The father-of-three revealed he has been busy making up for lost time with his family back home in his native country of Ukraine following his shock upset over Joshua in September.

“I’ve been spending time with my kids,” he added.

“I’ve been fishing, walking around doing nothing. Just relaxing… nothing changed much. I keep thanking the Lord for everything I have in my life.

“I keep cheering up, loving life and spending my time doing things I love.

“My son plays football. He is playing in defence, sometimes he’s moving to forward and he dreams to become world champion.

“We haven’t got any criticism in our relationship – he’s too young to criticise his father!

“And I’m not going to criticise my son, I’m just going to help him.”

Where was Anthony Joshua born?

And while Usyk is well aware that Joshua is planning on switching a few things up, he isn’t reading too much into it.

“Of course I saw the videos because we are collecting all the information,” he explained.

“But I don’t think anything about this because it’s Anthony’s business – let him do whatever he wants.

“Thank God I have everything (sorted) in my team – every member is in place so it’s all good.”
