Leyton Orient midfielder Jimmy Smith believes the club’s youngsters have what it takes to make an impact this season as the East London club goes about repairing the damage from their disastrous start to the League One season.

Orient endured a torrid start to the new campaign, winning just one of their first fourteen games in all competitions before fighting back to move out of the relegation zone and securing their place in the second round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 win over Bromley on Saturday.

A goal from youngster George Porter and good work from 18-year-old Moses Odubajo to set up Smith helped Orient ease to victory over their non-league opponents to secure a second round tie against either Bournemouth or Gillingham, and the former Chelsea midfielder believes the club are already reaping the reward of investing heavily in youth players.

“We've got good young players at the club," said Smith. "We've got a great squad and everyone's fighting for their position, not only in the starting XI but on the bench as well.”

Smith himself has been in fine form this season having found the net four times from midfield already, with his 79th minute goal against Bromley coming thanks to some good work by Odubajo to put the tie to bed.

"I was pleased to get on the end of it for the goal. It was good work from Mo and I think he's disappointed that he didn't score himself, but he's hit the post and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time."
