Gennady Golovkin looks set to face Ryoto Murata for the WBA middleweight world title on December 29 after ruthlessly dispatching Kamil Szeremeta last year.
And that comes after Chris Eubank Jr called for a shot at 'Triple GGG' by claiming "we now have the opportunity to get the fight made."
It will be Golovkin's first time boxing in Japan since 2001, having previously won a gold medal at the East Asian Games in Osaka.
And having all but given up hope of a trilogy fight against Canelo Alvarez, Golovkin could use it as a tune-up to prepare for an intriguing bout with Eubank Jr in 2022.
But he will face a tough test in the 16-2 Japanese fighter when they collide in Saitama which is located just outside of Murata's hometown of Tokyo.
Murata was born in Nara with both his parents coming from the Nara Prefecture in Japan.
He then moved to Tokyo after competing in the London 2012 Olympics.
Murata, who is also an Olympic gold medallist, is the WBA (Super) middleweight champion and defeated Steven Butler in December 2019.
The Tokyo-based boxer is promoted by Top Rank but has been unable to compete for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, Eubank Jr has hit back at those suggesting he is cherry picking his opponents and said that he would have no problem facing Golovkin.
Speaking ahead of his fight with Wanik Awdijan, Eubank Jr called out the Kazakhstani.
The 32-year-old showed no fear as he said: "The fact that he is a world champion and, in the middleweight division, is the biggest name.
"That fight could have been made years back but didn't happen.
"We now have the opportunity to get the fight made.
"We will get it done within the next six months.
"Styles make fights, it couldn't be anything other than epic.
"I throw non-stop punches and he doesn't fight going backwards. Those styles clashing? What more do you want!
"You see guys in fights just trying to survive. Me and him would get straight into it."
BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom said that talks are progressing between both parties and an announcement should be made in due course about Eubank's next opponent.
"Talks have started. Contact has been made with Golovkin's team and talks are progressing," Shalmon told Sky Sports.
"They want the fight with Eubank Jr and we're looking at a May date.
"There are huge fights out there for Eubank Jr, like Billy Joe Saunders and Demetrius Andrade.
"He wants to avenge the Billy Joe defeat. He feels like he was very young, had a slow start, and didn't have a trainer back then. He thinks it would be a different story next time.
"But the Golovkin fight is the huge one for his legacy. There's a reason why Eubank Jr's trainer is Roy Jones Jr - he wants to be around the best, and in the ring with the best."
