2021 Puskas Award: Dairon Asprilla's goal for Portland Timbers is surely a contender

Dairon Asprilla in action for Portland Timbers vs San Jose Earthquakes

Dairon Asprilla scored a contender for the 2021 Puskas Award during Portland Timbers’ MLS clash against San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday evening.

Diego Chara gave Portland the lead after 34 minutes.

Asprilla then doubled his side’s advantage with a quite extraordinary effort.

A through ball looked like it would be gathered by San Jose goalkeeper, JT Marcinkowski.

However, the shot-stopper spilled the ball when under pressure from Asprilla.

The Colombian still had so much to do. He found himself with his back to goal from outside the box.

Despite the goalkeeper being off his line, many players would probably have turned on the ball and drove towards the opposition goal.

But not Asprilla.

In a moment of pure genius, the 29-year-old flicked the ball up and then produced a quite extraordinary overhead kick that found the net.

It really was a quite sensational goal and you can view it below…

Simply sensational. That bring back shades of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s incredible goal against England in 2012.

That went on to win the Puskas Award, so there’s no reason why Asprilla’s isn’t a contender either.

Granted, he profited off a terrible error from the San Jose goalkeeper. But that shouldn’t take anything away from the goal.

Asprilla dedicated the goal to his late father in an emotional post-match press conference.

“I thought a lot about my dad when I scored that goal,” he said through an interpreter, per MLSSoccer.com. “Just with all the adversity and how hard last year and 2020 was, I think that gave me strength to score a goal like that.

“I have my superhero, I’m wearing my superhero right here. He has been an example for me always since the beginning, and it says right here only you know how incredible it was to be your son. Love you, Dad.”
