West Brom latest news: Hawthorns turning point for "struggling" Valerien Ismael signing

West Bromwich Albion head coach Valerien Ismael

Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield has backed Jordan Hugill to improve his form after enduring some "tough patches" during the early stages of his West Bromwich Albion career.

Hugill had to wait until his 10th Baggies appearance before grabbing his first goal for the club in a 3-0 win over Bristol City last weekend.

What's the latest news involving Hugill?

Fresh from his appointment as Albion's new head coach in June, Valerien Ismael had the opportunity to bolster his squad during the summer transfer window.

The former Barnsley chief opted to strengthen his attacking options by acquiring Hugill on a season-long loan from newly-promoted Premier League outfit Norwich City in August.

It came after Hugill scored four goals to help the Canaries win a second Championship title in the space of three seasons.

But, after a lengthy wait to get on the scoresheet with his new club, Hugill admitted to being relieved to find the back of the net against Bristol City and hopes to now go on a goalscoring run.

Ismael has called on Hugill to become a more potent goalscorer and labelled the frontman as 'a very important player for us'.

What has Luke Hatfield said about Hugill?

Hatfield feels Hugill's goal will have lifted a weight off the 29-year-old's shoulders.

The journalist admits Hugill's move to the Hawthorns has not paid off so far.

Hatfield told GIVEMESPORT: "You'd hope his first goal will allow him to kick-on because even Hugill, by his own admission, would say that he didn't start the season, after his move, as well as he would have liked to.

"He had some really tough patches in some games. In others he came in and made an impact but he was struggling to find that goal.

"Obviously, he got that goal and it was the end of a brilliant move as well from Albion. It was a really tidy goal to watch."

Why did West Brom sign Hugill on loan?

Hugill clearly has plenty of goals in him, having scored 72 times in 289 appearances throughout his career.

Which West Brom manager signed Kyle Bartley?

West Brom are looking to make an immediate return to the Premier League after suffering relegation last season.

The 6 ft striker has a small dose of top flight experience having made three substitute appearances while on the books of West Ham United.

But it is in the Championship, which the Baggies have to negotiate first, where Hugill has had the majority of his joy in front of goal having found the back of the net on 47 occasions in the division.
