Crystal Palace team news: Fresh injury update emerges on £18m Eagles star

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira

Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze has not suffered any setbacks in his recovery from injury and is nearing his long-awaited return, according to the Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

The exciting winger has been out of action since sustaining a serious Achilles injury during a training session in May.

What's the latest news involving Eze?

Eze quickly became a popular member of the squad after joining Palace in a £19.5million deal from Championship side Queens Park Rangers last year.

Andros Townsend, who completed a switch to Everton after his Eagles contract expired in the summer, admitted Eze's team-mates were left in tears in the aftermath of the injury at the club's Beckenham training base.

To make matters worse for the winger, it transpired that Eze discovered he would have been a member of England's provisional squad for Euro 2020 when he returned to the dressing room.

The initial diagnosis was that Eze would be on the sidelines for up to eight months but the 23-year-old is ahead of schedule in his recovery.

Reports suggested Eze could return to the pitch as soon as in last weekend's clash with Newcastle United, but that proved to be premature.

However, it is thought that he is on track to be back in action within a month.

What has Tom Barclay said about Eze?

Barclay insists Eze, who is valued at £18million by Transfermarkt, is still expected to return to contention in the not-too-distant future after making a quicker than expected recovery from his injury.

The journalist has not been made aware of Eze suffering any setbacks since stepping up his recovery in recent weeks.

He knows that Palace fans are keen to see Eze on the pitch as soon as possible.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: "He does look like he's progressing well in training and I'm sure Palace fans will be desperate to see him back."

How did Eze perform before sustaining the injury?

It comes as no surprise that England boss Gareth Southgate was watching Eze closely last season as he adapted to the Premier League seamlessly, notching four goals and six assists in 34 top flight appearances.

When did Southgate make his Palace debut?

However, he will be having to impress a new manager when he makes his comeback as Patrick Vieira moved into the Palace hotseat during the summer, following Roy Hodgson's exit.

Eze has shown he has the cutting edge to break down teams as, throughout his club career, he has amassed 29 goals and 19 assists in 170 outings.

Southgate also felt he was ready to make the step up to the senior squad after winning eight caps for the England under-21s.
