Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has not held back in his assessment of the team's performance in the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The Derby County manager stated that the players need to question themselves over their poor and passionless performances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"There is a big responsibility on those players. They are world-class players, international players and a club like United need more," Rooney said, per Sky Sports.

"Those players need to be hurt, need to feel when you lose games how much it hurts you.

"I'm seeing too many players not willing to run back, not willing to defend, and not willing to put everything on the line for that club and that's not acceptable."

Rooney is bang on the money and a man of his standing is more than deserving of being able to dish out that kind of criticism.

In his playing days at United, England's all-time leading scorer always gave 110% on the pitch and it's why he will forever be adored by Red Devils supporters.

Rooney used to lead by example with his tireless performances and the 36-year-old was also not afraid to berate his United teammates on the pitch during a woeful display.

A video highlighting that fact has popped up on social media in the wake of the club legend's comments on the resounding loss to Liverpool last weekend.

Now that's what you call a captain.

Okay, United went on to famously lose that game against Leicester at the King Power Stadium 5-3, but at least Rooney didn't just stand there and accept the team's ineptitude.

In the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool, it felt as if the players - including the senior ones - had simply accepted the thrashing, which is not on for a club of the Red Devils' stature.

Against Tottenham Hotspur, the players need to show much they care, otherwise, Solskjaer could be out of a job.
