The Sun's Tom Barclay believes Newcastle should target Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha in the January transfer window.

Zaha has spent most of his career at Selhurst Park, starting his second spell at the club back in 2015. Barclay thinks Newcastle should test Palace's resolve, though, by making an offer for the player at the start of 2022.

How has Zaha performed this season at Palace?

The 28-year-old was involved in more top-flight goals than any of his teammates last season, as he registered 13 goal contributions.

He has not been at his brilliant best this term, but he has still shown glimpses of his undoubted talent.

His standout performance arguably came in a London derby against Tottenham last month, when he scored and delivered an assist in a 3-0 win for the Eagles.

He then backed that up in Palace's next home match by scoring from the penalty spot during a 1-1 draw with Brighton.

What has Barclay said about Zaha?

Barclay has suggested that it is becoming more difficult for Zaha to get a big move away from Palace now that he is into his late twenties.

However, he is convinced that Newcastle should try to sign the Ivorian, and he has backed Zaha to keep the North-East club in the Premier League if he does join the Magpies.

Referring to Zaha, Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “I don’t know whether they’d be interested, but he turns 29 next month so that’s not ideal, talking about getting that move.

“But if I was Newcastle, I’d definitely be looking at him. If you can get him, he’s fantastic. He’d definitely keep them up, and he could build going forward.”

Would Zaha be a good signing for Newcastle?

With Zaha approaching his 29th birthday, there is an argument that he may only have a couple of years of his peak left.

Then again, he has shown no signs of slowing down just yet, and Newcastle need someone who can come in and make an instant impact. Zaha would probably be able to do that.

Having played over 250 games in the Premier League, Zaha has demonstrated time and time again that he can flourish at this level, and he has played a huge role in keeping Palace in the top-flight in recent years.

There is no reason why the forward, who is valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, couldn't steer Newcastle to safety as well.

This would then give the Toon Army a solid platform to build on heading into next season under their ambitious new owners.
