Man Utd news: Van de Beek and Sancho problems summed up by Gary Neville

Gary Neville on Van de Beek and Sancho

A convincing victory away at Tottenham was just what the doctor ordered for Manchester United.

After last week’s humiliating 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job was under enormous pressure.

He needed to do something to turn the tide.

That something was a change of formation and tactics for the visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Solskjaer opted for three at the back, with Fred and Scott McTominay in midfield and Bruno Fernandes playing behind Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It worked perfectly as goals from Ronaldo, Cavani and Marcus Rashford sealed a fantastic away victory.

You’d think that everyone associated with the club will be delighted and there was nothing but positives to come away from the match.

However, Sky Sports pundit, Gary Neville, had something on his mind at full-time – namely the situation surrounding Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho who were both unused substitutes in north London.

“Do you know something, I can help but think about Van de Beek,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Who’s put the name on him, who is sponsoring him at Manchester United, that kid who has sat in the stands and not kicked a football.

“Sancho if he’s not careful, is going to end up exactly the same.

“He’s played in some pretty appalling performances, not him, I mean team performances.

“He’s come into a club that’s looked totally disjointed in terms of their football, he’s played in a far better unit at Borussia Dortmund.

“He’s come in and is probably thinking ‘what the hell am I doing here, what is this, there’s no organisation or structure’

Van de Beek and Sancho

“He’s the only player if you look at Manchester United’s defensive running stats that is anywhere near.

“I think he’s fifth or sixth, he’s actually putting a shift in.

“He must be sitting on the bench thinking ‘what am I doing, I’m not going to play in this system.’

“Because I don’t see him in the two in midfield or the two up front, so he’s thinking where does my career go at Manchester United and Van de Beek is thinking the same.

“Today has been a good day but it does cause problems elsewhere.”

Manchester United quiz: Can you name the club’s most expensive signings in each of the last 10 years?

1 of 10

Who was the most expensive Manchester United signing of 2021?

It’s definitely an interesting point made by Neville.

If Solskjaer persists with this formation which contains no wingers, where does Sancho play?

It’s slightly easier to see Van de Beek in this formation – in one of the two midfield positions – but Solskjaer seems increasingly unwilling to pick the Dutchman.

It does make you wonder why the club spent £35 million on Van de Beek and £73 million on Sancho if they’re not part of their plans.

Of course, there is still plenty of time for the pair to earn Solskjaer’s trust but we can’t see the Norwegian changing tactics anytime soon now…
