Southampton transfer news: 6 ft 7 international 'widely expected' to leave St. Mary's

Journalist Tom Barclay has said it's "widely expected" that Fraser Forster will leave Southampton next summer.

Forster, along with current first-choice goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, is out of contract at St Mary's at the end of the season, but Barclay reckons that the former is the likelier of the two to move on.

What's the latest news involving Forster?

It's been more than seven years since the 6ft7 shot-stopper made the £10m switch from Celtic, but his time on the South Coast appears to be drawing to a close.

He quickly established himself as Saints' number one in his first three-and-a-half years at the club and would go on to win six caps for England.

However, since losing his place to McCarthy midway through the 2017-2018 season, it seems like Forster has been chasing a lost cause.

In fact, in the four years since losing the gloves, the 33-year-old has appeared just nine times in the Premier League, although he did spend the Covid-hit season on loan back at Celtic.

There were even times when Forster slipped to third-choice, although he's moved back up to second behind McCarthy.

Forster did perform well against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, making a wonderful save to deny Mason Mount in the penalty shoot-out, but unless McCarthy gets injured or his form dips, it's likely that he's played his last league game for Southampton.

With that in mind, Barclay reckons that he'll leave for nothing next summer.

What did Barclay say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "It's quite widely expected that Fraser Forster will leave on a free transfer because they're both out of contract in the summer, but I think McCarthy will stay."

Should Forster leave Southampton?

With no signs of him overtaking McCarthy as first-choice, moving Forster on would appear the right move for both parties.

What shirt number does Nathan Redmond wear for Southampton?

He's generally been a decent servant for Southampton, but with McCarthy firmly in control of the number one spot, he'll surely want to spend the latter years of his career playing regular first-team football.

Forster was linked with a third return to Celtic this summer, although that's now unlikely with Joe Hart the number one following his move from Tottenham, but there would surely be Championship clubs interested in his signature.
