The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh has warned Newcastle United will have to be shrewd during the January transfer window and supporters should not expect a quickfire squad overhaul.

A £305million takeover headed up by the Public Investment Fund resulted in Mike Ashley's 14-year reign as the club's owner coming to an end earlier this month.

Who have Newcastle been linked with signing?

The injection of cash has led to widespread rumours as to who could be among the first signings of the new era at St James' Park, with Burnley's James Tarkowski thought to be on their radar.

Central defender Tarkowski has entered the final 12 months of his £50,000-per-week contract at Turf Moor.

GIVEMESPORT has been told that Newcastle's new owners have links to Tarkowski, further heightening speculation.

A quartet of Manchester United stars - Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Donny van de Beek and Eric Bailly - have also been rumoured as potential targets.

According to German newspaper Bild, via the Sun, the Magpies are keen to negotiate a deal to take Timo Werner off Chelsea's hands and are in regular contact with the striker's agent.

What has Chris Waugh said about Newcastle's potential transfer business?

Waugh has backed Newcastle to sign Tarkowski when the transfer window reopens at the turn of the year.

However, he insists the Magpies will be unable to transform their squad in the space of a month.

Waugh told GIVEMESPORT: "January is a very difficult window as it is and it's not conducive to a squad overhaul, so you're looking more towards next summer for when that might happen.

"Also, people are going to be looking at Newcastle and thinking, 'we could just add money on to whoever it is that they want to sign'.

"They're going to have to look for cost effective deals but also ones who are going to improve the team.

"James Tarkowski will improve Newcastle United's team. They need to be shrewd on this. They need to try and find players towards the end of their contracts."

How have Newcastle performed so far this season?

Newcastle went into yesterday's clash with Chelsea still searching for their first win of the season.

They were also in the Premier League's relegation zone ahead of taking on the west Londoners, with Norwich City the only side with a worse record.

The poor form led to head coach Steve Bruce leaving St James' Park by mutual consent earlier this month.
