Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's value has sky-rocketed up to £70million, according to Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

Martinez joined in a £17million deal from Premier League rivals Arsenal 13 months ago and has gone on to become a key figure for Dean Smith's side.

What's the latest news involving Martinez?

Martinez headed to Villa Park having won the FA Cup twice during his time with Arsenal and he has since secured silverware on the international stage as he helped Argentina to clinch the Copa America earlier this year.

The shot-stopper quickly became a vital cog in Smith's team, with him featuring in all 38 of Villa's Premier League fixtures last season.

He has only missed one top flight fixture this term, with that coming due to Martinez being unable to feature against Chelsea after heading onto international duty.

The 29-year-old's form for Villa and Argentina has led to him being nominated for the 2021 Lev Yashin Award, meaning he in contention to be crowned the world's best goalkeeper.

Despite Martinez's impressive performances, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has insisted he stands by his decision to allow the custodian to leave the Emirates Stadium last year.

What has Luke Hatfield said about Martinez?

Hatfield has revealed that Villa stand to make a huge profit if they choose to sell Martinez in the coming years.

Villa are in a strong negotiating position if any potential suitors come forward as Martinez still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his £47,000-per-week deal.

Although Transfermarkt value Martinez at £31.5million, Hatfield feels the Argentinian is worth close to double that figure.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: "Martinez is now probably worth £60million or £70million.

"He is one of the leading goalkeepers in world football at the moment in terms of form and his quality."

Who else has praised Martinez?

Lionel Messi is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all-time, having notched 675 goals and 301 assists in just 785 club appearances.

The Paris Saint-Germain attacker has labelled Martinez as "one of the best goalkeepers in the world".

Messi's claim came after Martinez made six appearances at the Copa America, with the shot-stopper keeping four clean sheets en route to getting his hands on the trophy in August.

In total, Martinez has now won 12 Argentina caps and is regarded as his country's first choice goalkeeper.

Martinez was also hailed by club boss Smith after he kept 15 Premier League clean sheets last season, equalling a Villa record held by Brad Friedel.
