Newcastle World journalist Liam Kennedy thinks the club will want to make some statement signings in January.

The Magpies now have the richest owners in the Premier League, and Kennedy has predicted that they will flex their financial muscles when the transfer window opens.

What's the latest news at Newcastle?

On the pitch, Newcastle have had a far from ideal start to the season, and look likely to be involved in a relegation battle this year.

However, their long-awaited takeover finally went through earlier this month, and it has been reported that the club's new owners could spend over £200m in the upcoming transfer windows without facing any Financial Fair Play (FFP) sanctions.

The North-East side look set to splash the cash, and they may want to lay down a marker at the start of 2022.

What has Kennedy said about Newcastle's potential transfer policy in January?

Kennedy has claimed that Newcastle have previously shown interest in 99-cap international Gareth Bale, and he expects the Premier League outfit to go after similar marquee names moving forwards.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Newcastle United, last summer there was a lot of talk of Gareth Bale. These players are damaged goods, but they are quality players who are the type of flagships that make people stand up and take notice.

“I would anticipate, as well as being some solid signings and levelling up in a lot of positions, I think they’ll want that feather in the cap. I think they’ll want one or two who really get people standing up and taking notice.”

Should Newcastle look to make flagship signings?

It's important that Newcastle get the balance right in terms of who they look to sign in the next transfer window.

Bringing in big-name players will undoubtedly excite the fans, but the club also need to be confident that they can key contributions, and are not just coming for one final pay cheque.

For example, Bale has been an outstanding winger for over a decade, but he is now 32 years of age, and has had his fair share of injury problems in recent seasons. There is no guarantee that he would be able to come in and stay fit to help Newcastle move up the table.

As a result, Newcastle's primary focus should be to add players to their squad who are in their prime or approaching it. Then, once they get these individuals, they can perhaps look to make some flagship signings later on in January.
