Netherlands legend Edgar Davids attended Chelsea training as a guest of manager Andre Villas-Boas, on Thursday.

The legendary midfield enforcer, formerly of rivals Tottenham Hotspur and latterly of Crystal Palace was on hand to watch some of the Portuguese manager's training methods ahead of the The Blues' game against Liverpool this weekend.

And Davids says Villas-Boas' philosophy is to be applauded.

"I have a common friend with the coach and I have always been interested in this philosophy because he likes playing attractive and attacking football and I love that," Davids said.

"It's the philosophy I was raised with, it's a very Dutch way, that's why it is interesting to me. It is difficult for a team not used to playing like that to transform to the system, so I was curious to see how he was doing that and encouraging it.

"When I played with Spurs, Frank Lampard was a goalscoring machine and did very well, unfortunately for us, and I played a couple of times against Roberto Di Matteo in Italy," he added.

"He was a smart player, he knew his abilities and used them very well."
