Adam Armstrong has found it difficult adjusting to the pace of the Premier League and being seen as the main man at Southampton, according to the Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

Armstrong made the move to St Mary's during the summer transfer window, with Saints forking out up to £15million to acquire the striker's services from Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

What's the latest news involving Armstrong?

Armstrong had big boots to fill when he agreed to join Southampton, with boss Ralph Hasenhuttl making his move after seeing Danny Ings switch to Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Although Saints were able to secure a £25million fee for Ings, his departure left a void in Hasenhuttl's side after scoring 46 goals in 100 appearances for the club.

Armstrong made a promising start to his Southampton career, netting on his debut at Everton, but he has failed to get his name on the scoresheet since.

The 24-year-old's lack of goals led to him being dropped to the bench for two Premier League fixtures, prior to being reinstated to the starting line-up for Saturday's win at Watford, last month.

Hasenhuttl admitted he opted to leave Armstrong out of the first XI after seeing the striker miss a host of opportunities during the early weeks of the campaign.

What has Tom Barclay said about Armstrong?

Barclay believes Armstrong has found it difficult adapting to the rigours of the top flight.

However, he feels the summer signing has not been helped by coming into an unsettled side.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: "Obviously, the adaptation from the Championship to the Premier League is big, particularly for a striker.

"Some players take to it but, particularly in a Southampton team that seems to have had a lot of new faces and adjusting a lot of young players, it's not like he has come into a settled side and can feed off that.

"He's instantly being looked to with the hope he is the guy to score the goals in a team that's adjusting and that's really tough."

Are there indications that Armstrong is capable of adjusting?

Armstrong has a formidable record in the Championship, having scored 56 goals over the course of 186 appearances.

A whopping 28 of those goals came for Blackburn last season, so he has made the step up to the Premier League after impressing.

Although he failed to score on his return to the starting line-up, he grabbed what proved to be a valuable assist in the 1-0 win over Watford at the weekend, so he still made a telling contribution in the final third of the pitch.

Despite that, he was only given a 6/10 rating for his performance at Vicarage Road.
