Arsenal latest news: Gunners 'onto something' after major £30m transfer gamble

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta giving the thumbs-up

The Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield has been very impressed by what he has seen from Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal this season.

Ramsdale joined the Gunners for £30m in August, and has looked right at home ever since.

What's the latest news involving Ramsdale?

The 23-year-old was in the headlines for all the right reasons this past weekend after his stunning performance against Leicester City.

He was in inspired form, making a number of crucial saves, including a scarcely believable one from a James Maddison free-kick. His heroics helped Arsenal to a 2-0 win, with Gabriel and Emile Smith Rowe scoring at the other end.

That victory lifts Arsenal to sixth, just three points outside the top four, and means that Ramsdale has now kept four clean sheets in his seven league appearances for Mikel Arteta's men.

What has Hatfield said about Ramsdale?

Hatfield has pointed out that much of Arsenal's previous success has been built off the back of having a solid shot-stopper. He has hinted that Ramsdale looks to be up to the job of following in the footsteps of past legends such as David Seaman.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about the young goalkeeper, he said: “Arsenal have always tried to have a decent goalkeeper in there. You look back at the likes of David Seaman and they’ve always wanted that kind of quality goalkeeper, and it looks like they’re onto something with him.”

Can Ramsdale help get Arsenal back into the top four?

When Arsenal paid a significant fee for Ramsdale in the summer, it looked like somewhat of a gamble. After all, he was relegated with Bournemouth and Sheffield United in the past two seasons.

However, he has been a breath of fresh air at the Emirates. His display against Leicester was phenomenal, and if he can keep doing that on a consistent basis it will become undeniable that Arsenal have a special talent on their hands.

Who was the most expensive Arsenal signing of 2021?

The north London club have not been in the Champions League since 2017, and the way they started this season suggested that they would not end that run this year.

They have now hit form, though, and with Manchester United stuttering under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Tottenham in turmoil which has led to Nuno Espirito Santo's sacking, the door has been left ajar for Arsenal.

Arteta looks to be building an ever-improving backline, with Ramsdale looking comfortable in between the sticks, and if he continues to keep clean sheets regularly, Arsenal could be in with a sniff of getting back into the top four this term.
