F1 Sprint will be expanded to take place at six races next season, with potential for more points-paying places to also be introduced, Ross Brawn has revealed.

The new weekend format has been trialled at two Grands Prix this year, with another set to take place at the Brazilian race later on this month.

Certainly, it's been interesting to see a different format for a race weekend with more meaningful action taking place across the three days and it sounds as though we'll have double the amount of that next year.

Further tweaks are not as set in stone as the plan for six editions of Sprint, meanwhile, but Brawn has hinted that more points-paying places at a third of Grand Prix points could be introduced to increase the incentive to push, as well as Friday qualifying still counting as pole for the Grand Prix on Sunday - after fans and drivers raised concerns about pole positions being recorded:

“It’s been a consistent comment amongst fans and drivers that the person who does the fastest single lap with low fuel in qualifying is the pole position holder,” Brawn said.

“I guess we hadn’t really considered that when we set out this new format. I would like to see a reversion to that being pole position. There is broad opinion that Friday should be pole position for the sprint weekends, so I would hope we can get that through for next year. I am optimistic on that.”

The venues for the six Sprints are yet to be decided for 2022 but on the points expansion, Brawn had this to say:

“It goes far enough down for people in lower positions to want to fight for it, but is not a number that will over-influence the championship.”
