Salah, Benzema, Lewandowski: Who have been the best players across Europe in 2021/22?

Benzema, Salah, Mane and Lewandowski have all excelled in 2021/22

We are just over a quarter of a way into the 2021/22 season.

In the Premier League, it's Chelsea who lead the way, followed by Liverpool and Manchester City.

It's all to play for in La Liga. Real Sociedad are currently the surprise leaders but have Real Madrid, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid breathing down their necks.

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are the front runners in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga respectively, while Napoli and AC Milan have both gone unbeaten in their opening 11 Serie A games.

But who have been the best individual performers in each of Europe's top five leagues?

We've looked at stats provided by WhoScored.com to answer that very question.

PREMIER LEAGUE

Edouard Mendy; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Trevoh Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Joao Cancelo; Mohamed Salah, Declan Rice, Mateo Kovacic, Sadio Mane; Ivan Toney, Michail Antonio

The most represented team is Chelsea. perhaps the most surprising inclusion from the Blues is Chalobah.

The youngster was close to being sent out on loan in the summer but was kept after a move for Jules Kounde fell through. He has been superb in his six outings, scoring twice.

There's no surprise that Salah makes the side, with Mane and Alexander-Arnold being Liverpool's other two representatives.

SERIE A

David Ospina; Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Gleison Bremer, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mario Rui; Domenico Berardi, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Fabian Ruiz, Felipe Anderson; Paulo Dybala, Victor Osimhen

It's not much of a surprise that six Napoli players make the Serie A best XI when they have been so dominant this season.

It is surprising, though, that no AC Milan players feature.

The highest-rated player in Serie A so far in 2021/22 has been Dybala. The Argentine had a poor 2020/21 campaign but has thrived after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

LA LIGA

Luís Maximiano; Nacho Vidal, David Garcia, Aritz Elustondo, Sergino Dest; Mikel Oyarzabal, Mikel Merino, Lucas Torro, Vinicius Jr; Karim Benzema, Memphis Depay

Benzema has been far and away the best player in La Liga this campaign.

The Frenchman, who continues to go from strength to strength, has already hit the back of the net nine times in 10 Spanish top tier games.

Vinicius Jr also makes the side. The Brazilian is starting to fulfil his potential and is fast emerging into one of the best wingers in world football.

Barca have had a very poor season by their standards but two of their players make the best XI - Depay and Dest.

BUNDESLIGA

Lukas Hradecky; Lukas Kübler, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Keven Schlotterbeck, Alphonso Davies; Christopher Nkunku, Joshua Kimmicj, Jude Bellingham, Leroy Sane; Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland

Haaland has had his injury problems this term but has been higher rated than Lewandowski, despite the Pole hitting the back of the net a ridiculous 12 times in 10 games.

As well as Lewandowski, Kimmich, Sane and Davies also make the XI.

Ligue 1

Anthony Lopes; Frédéric Guilbert, Marquinhos, William Saliba, Melvin Bard; Jonathan Clauss, Téji Savanier, Dimitri Payet, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Kylian Mbappe, Amine Gouiri

The first thing that stands out is that there's no Lionel Messi. And he's not even close, either. His average rating of 6.75 means he's only been the 123rd best player in Ligue 1 this campaign. Ouch.

Ranking football's ultimate GOATS on The Football Terrace! Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane, R9... Who is the greatest of all time?!

Neymar also doesn't make the side but Mbappe does. The Frenchman has directly contributed to nine goals in 11 Ligue 1 games in 2021/22.

Saliba, who is on loan at Marseille from Arsenal, has impressed greatly so far this campaign.
