Olympic diving champion Tom Daley has recalled a conversation he had with US Open winner Emma Raducanu at the Met Gala in September.

Raducanu was invited to attend the prestigious fundraising event after her unexpected victory at the US Open.

The 18-year-old became the first ever qualifier to ever win a Grand Slam title after beating Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in the final at Flushing Meadows.

She also became the first female British tennis player to win a major since 1977.

In an interview with GQ, Daley described his own experience of the Met Gala, revealing he fully ripped his trousers on the way to an afterparty. He also recalled meeting Raducanu.

"I remember coming out of the toilet and she was there and I was just like, 'Oh, my gosh, congratulations. I’m Tom. I think you’re awesome. What you’ve done and what you’re going to continue to do in the future is going to be so great.'

"And I think she probably was a bit like, 'Oh, my gosh, why is he talking to me?' I think for her it’s probably just been extremely overwhelming."

Indeed, Raducanu later revealed that she found the Met Gala red carpet more nerve-wracking than playing in the US Open final.

"It was funny because I was more nervous standing and waiting to take the photos at the Met than going out onto Ashe [Arthur Ashe Stadium]," she told the WTA.

"Because it was such a different experience. It was a bit more intimidating at the start but then I feel like I've learned that I can adapt quite quickly and learn on the job."

Raducanu, who began this year ranked 345th in the world and only made her debut on the WTA tour in June, is now world number 21.

She first made a name for herself at Wimbledon, where she reached the fourth round as a wildcard, before stunning the world at the US Open.

The Briton has since grabbed a number of opportunities with both hands, becoming the face of jewellery retailer Tiffany and Co and an ambassador for high-end fashion brand Dior.

On the court, she most recently reached the quarter-finals of the Transylvania Open, losing to Marta Kostyuk. The youngster will next compete at this week’s Upper Austria Ladies Linz.

Fellow Briton Daley also had a successful summer, earning a gold medal in the men's synchronized 10-metre platform alongside Matty Lee at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
