Cristiano Ronaldo rode to the rescue of Manchester United yet again last night.

If, as you read that sentence, you felt overwhelmed by a thunderous bout of deja vu, then you weren't alone.

Ronaldo has already made a habit of saving the Red Devils from embarrassment this season and took it to the next level last night with his last-minute equaliser against Atalanta.

Ronaldo's rasping volley in stoppage time was enough to earn a point and break Atalanta hearts, only weeks after he broke those same hearts at Old Trafford.

In truth, United have really struggled in the Champions League this season but, somehow, they find themselves top of their group and in a good position to advance to the knockout stages.

Without their clutch saviour, the Manchester side would be in a real spot of bother both on domestic shores and in their European conquests.

Whenever United are pushing for a winner or to rescue a point at the moment, there is an odd air of inevitability about Ronaldo, almost as if he, and everyone else knows that he is going to score at some point.

However, Ronaldo's propensity for last-minute heroics is not something new at all - in fact, it has been one of the most reliable arrows in his quiver for many a year.

Following his volley against Atalanta last night, a video has begin doing the rounds on Twitter that proves that the Portuguese superstar really is the ultimate clutch star.

From the white of Real Madrid to the famous stripes of Juventus, from national colours to both spells at United, Ronaldo has been breaking hearts and stealing points for his entire career.

The proof is in the clutch pudding.

While Ronaldo's heroics are understandably the talk of the town, there is a simmering foreboding under the surface that suggests there are concerns that he is simply papering over some gaping cracks.

Let's not forget that his goal last night, while objectively very special, was only an equaliser against Atalanta.

Why Manchester United REJECTED Conte & Refused to SACK Ole

Of course, it is United who earn the points and the wins at the end of the day, but surely they can't keep relying on Ronaldo to haul them out of the mire every time they have an off day.

For now though, United will just be thanking their lucky stars that their specialist lifesaver is getting the business done when it counts.
