Liverpool vs Atletico: Ranking their UCL squads from 'World Class' to 'Underwhelming'

Liverpool welcome Atletico Madrid back to Anfield tonight looking to exact revenge for that dramatic March 2020 defeat.

As Covid ominously hung over the world, the Champions League round of 16 clash was allowed to go ahead with fans present, but it proved to be a night to forget on the pitch for the Reds.

Having restored parity in normal time, following their first leg defeat, Liverpool fell apart at the seams as they pushed for a winner, with Atletico running amuck in extra time.

The images of the frenzied celebrations among the Atletico contingent on the night have been burned into the minds of the Liverpool faithful, who will be desperate to get their own back.

So, ahead of the crunch clash, we thought we would have a go at ranking the two squads with the help of the always handy Tiermaker system.

You will almost certainly have disagreements but that is the beauty of this game we love - at the end of the day, there will still be a fantastic football game tonight.

World Class

This category is reserved for the absolute best of the best - the sort of star that would walk into any team on the planet and make an instant impact.

Both goalkeepers ease their way into this tier, while Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold balance the scales with the two supreme forwards.

This is where the controversy may begin. In our opinion, these lads are incredible footballers, but have they done enough to be included as 'World Class'? Not for us.

Sadio Mane may feel hard done by, but he simply hasn't been at his world beating best for a while now.

Sadio Mane
Antoine Griezmann
Kieran Trippier
Joel Matip
Joao Felix

Very Handy

Now these lads might not be the be all and end all, but you can be sure that the likes of Diego Simeone and Jurgen Klopp are more than happy to have them in their squads.

They are reliable, will always do a job and can slot in seamlessly when some of the higher ranked lads aren't available.

Middle Of The Road

Now don't get us wrong, these are all very talented footballers, but they just don't seem to be at a level that would see them as nailed on starters.

Underwhelming

Through no fault of their own, this group of lads find themselves on the fringes at their respective clubs and, try as they might, it doesn't look like that is going to change anytime soon.
