Youtuber turned boxer, Jake Paul, has confirmed a fight between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor is in the works –– describing the contest as “the biggest women’s boxing event in history.”
Serrano signed for Paul’s ‘Most Valuable Promotions’ back in September and emphasised her excitement at being represented by a new team.
“They’re such a powerful team,” Serrano said. “I’ve seen what they’ve done in the last two years –– what Jake has done, what Nakisa [Bidarian] has done for Jake. I’m looking forward to what they can do for me.
Paul has previously been vocal in his support of Serrano and described her as the “greatest Hispanic female athlete of all time.”
“Without really much help she’s gotten this far, with just her skills,” Paul said. “She hasn’t had someone with a big platform really put her on. She’s so marketable. And really the sky’s the limit, and that’s what we do at MVP.
“There’s a new era of boxing and there’s a new way about promoting these fights and there’s a new way to become a big fighter. So, she already has the skills, and now we’re going to add our secret sauce into the equation.”
The Puerto Rican has already had a remarkable career and is currently the unified featherweight champion, having held the WBO title since 2019, the WBC title since February 2021 and the IBO title since March 2021.
Serrano is also the only female to win world titles in five or more weight classes and holds the world record for most boxing world championships in different weights by a woman, having held nine major titles across seven classes.
Nicknamed “The Real Deal”, Serrano has been recognised with the Female Boxer of the Year Award twice and is considered one of the best pound for pound boxers in women’s boxing.
In his latest YouTube video, Paul said that Serrano was an “amazing person” and revealed she’ll be fighting as the co-main event on his next fight against Tommy Fury in Tampa, Florida, on December 18th.
The Puerto Rican also co-main evented Paul’s last fight against Tyron Woodley in Cleveland, where she beat Mexico’s Yamileth Mercado via unanimous decision to retain her featherweight titles.
Paul also confirmed that his promotional company are aiming to set up a fight between Serrano and undisputed lightweight champion, Katie Taylor, for 2022.
The much-anticipated fight was scheduled to take place at the Manchester Arena in May 2020 but was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, Paul is confident the bout will take place and promises it will be worth the wait.
“Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano. Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing and then Most Valuable Promotions. It’s going to be the biggest women’s fight in history, so I’m super excited about that.”
While Serrano is one of the biggest attractions in women’s boxing, Paul has not ruled out bringing in more female boxers to Most Valuable Promotions but says they have to be the right fit.
For now, the focus is purely on Serrano and indeed, himself, as both look to prepare for December 18th.
