Overwatch 2 has been delayed once again, with fans understandably shocked considering the Overwatch League in 2022 reportedly being played on an early version of the game.
There have been several instances that have seen Overwatch 2 pushed back over the past couple of years, with Blizzard wanting to release the new version of the eSports giant once it is “ready.”
Here’s everything you need to know about Overwatch 2 and the reason that it has been delayed once again.
At this point in time, it is believed that Overwatch 2 will not be coming out until 2023 as a retail title.
As of writing, there is no confirmation if this will affect the 2022 iteration of the Overwatch League and how that continues.
Why Is Overwatch 2 Delayed?
Blizzard confirmed the exact reasoning behind Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 being delayed as part of a press release.
They noted: “As we have worked with new leadership in Blizzard and within the franchises themselves, particularly in certain key creative roles, it has become apparent that some of the Blizzard content planned for next year will benefit from more development time to reach its full potential.
“While we are still planning to deliver a substantial amount of content from Blizzard next year, we are now planning for a later launch for Overwatch 2, and Diablo IV than originally envisaged.”
Although the game is still expected to be released, there are a lot of fans who are concerned that this move into ‘development hell’ means that the game may never actually see the light of day.
Gamers on the r/Overwatch subreddit have noted that we’ve had yet another delay just over 2 years since the original announcement of the game. One Redditor would lament: “I think we’re getting to the point where we will be lucky if OW2 releases, genuinely.
“Games getting delayed this hard and having an exodus of developers doesn’t typically bode well for franchises, historically.”
Another Overwatch fan wrote “Given the numerous rough spots blizzard seems to have been having lately I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Overwatch 2 is cancelled.
“And as much as I genuinely hate to say this I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Overwatch IP as a whole just dies within the next few years…
“It’s a sad reality that I have seen in a number of games that had potential or even a time in the spotlight but fell off the map for some reason or another.”
Hopefully, we’ll get more information on the game soon.
