Newcastle United could sign Wolverhampton Wanderers skipper Conor Coady for as little as £17million when the transfer window reopens, according to Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

Coady is among a list of targets ahead of the January transfer window and is a huge favourite of advisor Frank McParland, who is one of Amanda Staveley's trusted friends and expected to take a senior role at Newcastle.

What's the latest news involving Coady?

Coady has been on Wolves' books since joining for a fee believed to be in the region of £2million from Championship side Huddersfield Town six years ago.

He has gone on to become a key player at Molineux, with him closing in on 300 appearances in the black and gold.

The club captain has been an ever-present member of the squad despite a change in management seeing Bruno Lage move into the dugout during the summer, with Coady starting all of Wolves' fixtures so far this season.

Newcastle's interest comes after a takeover worth £305million was completed last month, making the Magpies the richest club in world football.

Coady also labelled the Tynesiders as a 'huge club' as he reacted to the change of ownership being confirmed on talkSPORT.

What has Luke Hatfield said about Coady?

Coady is valued at £22.5million by Transfermarkt, but Hatfield has claimed that Newcastle and other potential suitors may be able to prise him away from Wolves for less than that figure.

The centre-half still has four years remaining on his contract, meaning his current employers would be in a strong negotiating position.

But Hatfield believes Wolves fans would not be against the club accepting a substantial bid.

Newcastle's new owners could spend £200m without breaching FFP! Hear how on The Football Terrace...

He told GIVEMESPORT: "If an offer of between £17million and £20million came in, I think a lot of Wolves fans would probably look at that and say it might be worth doing."

What would Coady bring to Newcastle?

Coady's leadership qualities could play a key role in Newcastle's bid to climb the Premier League table, with them currently finding themselves in the relegation zone.

The 28-year-old offers bags of top flight experience as well, having made more than 120 Premier League appearances.

His form for Wolves has also resulted in Coady breaking into England boss Gareth Southgate's plans, with him now boasting seven caps and being a member of the Euro 2020 squad.

Coady is not the only central defender being heavily linked with a move to St James' Park as Burnley's James Tarkowski is on Newcastle's radar.
