A sports gaming firm have expressed their interest in purchasing the FIFA gaming license from EA Sports, according to reports.

2K Sports, who are responsible for developing titles such as NBA 2K22 and WWE 2K22, are looking to take advantage after going public about their relationship with the football governing body.

The Canadian gaming giants have already trademarked the name 'EA Sports FC' and have openly expressed that they are reconsidering their partnership with FIFA after it was previously reported that the financial demands were not feasible.

This has left the door ajar for another company to swoop in to take FIFA off EA's hands, although it seems unbelievable that the Canadians would even consider this, taking into account the amount of success they've had together over the years.

That being said, this has not stopped rival publishers from getting themselves into the conversation as the future of the FIFA gaming series is up in the air.

2K Sports FIFA License

A recent interview (transcribed by VGC), suggested that talks are either taking place or set to happen. 2K chief Strauss Zelnick was asked whether he was interested in acquiring the licensing of FIFA, and, well, here's what he had to say.

"That’s a big step forward for us… we haven’t been in that sport before. And erm, I think I’ll leave it at that today."

Despite clearly remaining coy on the situation, for now, FUTZone elaborated on this by revealing that discussions have begun in relation to purchasing the FIFA licensing.

It will take a while for millions of gamers to get used to the idea that EA are no longer making the FIFA series - that's if they make the surprising decision of cutting ties and heading in their own direction.

Considering the reputation they have built up over 26 years in this sector of the industry, it might make financial sense for them to head in their own direction, leaving an open goal for a company such as 2K to swoop in and obtain the licensing.

The coming months will be crucial as far as the future of FIFA is concerned, and could either make or break the franchise going forward. Time will tell.
