Alan Shearer: Newcastle United legend takes dig at Sunderland on The Overlap

  • Rob Swan

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer couldn’t resist taking a cheeky dig at Sunderland while speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap.

Shearer was interviewed by his former England teammate, who has spoken to various star names over the course of 2021 including Roy Keane, Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Harry Kane.

Ahead of the full Shearer interview, a seven-minute clip has been released which shows Neville asking Shearer 30 quick-fire questions.

The Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer answered various questions including Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? Which manager would you have wanted to play for? And which young player has the potential to become the world’s best?

Shearer selected Messi over Ronaldo, said he would like to play under Jurgen Klopp, and believes Manchester City’s Phil Foden can become the world’s best footballer.

However, it was his comments about Sunderland that Newcastle fans, in particular, will enjoy.

Neville asked the legendary striker: “Best thing about Sunderland?”

Shearer replied: “Is there anything good about Sunderland?”

Neville said: “Anything?”

Shearer responded: “They’re in League One?”

Neville couldn’t help but burst out laughing, before adding: “That’s brutal!”
