Cristiano Ronaldo: The 'problem he's creating at Man Utd' explained in video

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo once again demonstrated his brilliance in midweek with two goals – including an injury-time equaliser – during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Atalanta.

They were Ronaldo’s eighth and ninth goals of the season as the Portuguese superstar proves he’s still got it at the age of 36.

However, despite his incredible goalscoring form, Ronaldo has come under criticism recently during United’s poor results.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side find themselves eight points off the pace in the Premier League as they continue to stumble through their Champions League group.

But how is that any of Ronaldo’s fault?

Well, many pundits and fans have highlighted his lack of pressing from the front. That shouldn’t come as a huge surprise given his advancing years.

But it runs a bit deeper than that and Tifo Football have produced a brilliant animated video that perfectly sums up ‘The problem Cristiano Ronaldo is creating at Manchester United.’

No, it’s not saying that Ronaldo is finished and they should get rid of him.

The ‘problem Cristiano Ronaldo is creating at Man Utd’

They begin the video by suggesting that United knew what they would be getting when they re-signed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“They would get little out of him in terms of regaining possession, but would be sure of a goal per game, or pretty close to it.”

Well, that’s spot on so far.

The video goes on to explain how United aren’t covering for Ronaldo’s lack of press.

Looking at examples from the 4-2 defeat to Leicester last month, Tifo highlight that United neither form a low-block effectively nor press as a team.

They state that Bruno Fernandes is now required to do more running without possession to compensate for Ronaldo. That has seen him expend a lot more energy and his output has decreased as a result.

Where was Cristiano Ronaldo born?

This wouldn’t be too much of a problem if United had more disciplined wingers but Jadon Sancho is struggling to adapt. He’s familiar with a more attacking and pressing role at Borussia Dortmund which might explain why Solskajer has benched him recently.

A similar problem exists with Mason Greenwood on the other wing, who is more of a centre forward than a defensive winger.

And then there’s Paul Pogba in midfield, who has also found himself left out in recent weeks when he’s not getting sent off and suspended. The Frenchman began the season in an attacking wide position but struggles defensively in central midfield.

Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo

“Solskajer feels like a Galactico-Era Real Madrid manager, compelled to start certain players because of their reputation,” the video states.

The video concludes with: “This all feels entirely predictable after Ronaldo’s arrival. Whether he should contribute more without possession is debatable but it seems his arrival has caused a tactical conundrum that Solskjaer might not be able to solve.”

It’s clear that Ronaldo is still capable of producing moments of magic at the very highest level. He continues to average almost a goal every game. But in a team that isn’t particularly well-coached and incapable of covering his lack of pressing, United’s results will continue to suffer.
