It looks likely that Lionel Messi will be holding Ballon d'Or number seven aloft in Paris on November 29th.

As we reported HERE, Portuguese television channel RTP claim that France Football have already informed the Argentine superstar of his victory in the voting.

Messi has been the favourite to scoop the accolade for quite some time now and much of that is down to his heroics at the 2021 Copa America.

The 34-year-old rocked up to the South American festival of football under enormous pressure, as he'd never previously never guided Argentina to a major international trophy.

But all that changed in the summer, with Messi leading from the front as La Albiceleste ended 28 years of hurt by lifting the trophy in the Maracana Stadium after beating Brazil 1-0 in the final.

For Argentina, it really doesn't get any better than that.

Messi with the Copa America trophy

Messi finished the Copa America with the joint-most goals (four, along with Colombia's Luis Diaz) and the most assists (five), numbers which rightly saw him named the Player of the Tournament.

It was Leo at his magnificent, awe-inspiring best and a devoted fan of the six-time (soon to be seven-time?) Ballon d'Or winner has compiled his best moments from the summer into one emotional video.

Video: Messi's 2021 Copa America journey

That really is a masterpiece.

The footage of a sat down Messi looking up to the sky with a smile on his face after the final victory against Brazil is the perfect starting point and it just gets better from there.

In the months that have passed since the 2021 Copa America was completed, we'd actually forgotten just how good the little man's free-kicks against Chile and Ecuador were.

The only minor downside to Messi's campaign was the fact he failed to really turn up in the final itself, with Angel Di Maria the man who struck the decisive blow against Brazil.

But without their generation-defining captain leading from the front in the games prior, Argentina would have crashed out of the tournament in the earlier rounds.

It's simple really, Messi's 2021 Copa America is one of the greatest individual campaigns at a major international tournament and there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it.
