Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant: UFC president Dana White wins big after laying massive bet

UFC president, Dana White, had many reasons to be smiling at his UFC 268 event, at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Not only was it a hit with MMA fans across the world, but White also revealed he had made a $100k bet on Canelo Alvarez knocking out Caleb Plant which saw him win $40,000.

Sitting ringside for the battle between Rose Namajunas and Zhang Weili, he was caught tuning into the Canelo vs Plant fight, which prompted him to joke that it was in the interest of his bank balance to see who won.

Following the event, White was questioned on his thoughts regarding the comments made by UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, earlier on in the week.

Usman had expressed his wishes for a cross-over fight that would see him face Canelo, in an event never seen before.

Usman commented; “If I’m looking at a legacy, I want to do something that’s never been done before.” Although the idea was quickly put to bed by White.

“I watched the Canelo fight tonight. You don’t wanna fight Canelo.” White explained in an almost humorous tone.

“You don’t wanna fight Canelo. Come on, man, lets stop this sh*t. If Canelo wants to come over here, then let’s do it. But he don’t wanna box Canelo.”

Canelo himself had a simple response; “Payday,” insinuating that Usman was simply looking to make some money.

Canelo has a decision to make when it comes to his next steps as he can stay at 168lbs and fight to defend his titles against the like of David Benavidez and a few others, or he could make the more dangerous route of moving back up to light-heavyweight which would see him take on Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

Usman has beaten practically all the welterweight division with his next challenger anticipated to be Leon Edwards if he can conquer Jorge Masvidal at UFC 269.

Usman already faced Edwards back in 2015, and defeated him, but both are hugely evolved fighters now and will essentially poses as new challengers for each other.

With White continuing to cash in, a debut crossover seeming unlikely, and future challengers still unknown, the MMA world is clearly one to watch.
