Arsenal dominated Watford at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon but only ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Emile Smith-Rowe’s second half strike.
However, controversy surrounded the goal.
It was an eventful match, in truth.
Arsenal saw an early goal by Bukayo Saka disallowed by VAR for offside.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then saw a penalty saved by Ben Foster before the break.
But 10 minutes into the second half, they found the breakthrough.
However, it came about in controversial circumstances.
Watford had put the ball out for an injured player. They expected Arsenal to give the ball back to them upon the restart.
But the home side didn’t.
A few passages of play later, Smith-Rowe fired the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box.

It proved to be the only goal of the match.
It was something that new Watford manager, Claudio Ranieri, wasn’t happy about at full-time as he confronted Mikel Arteta on the final whistle.

Incidentally, it's not the first time Arsenal have been involved in a controversial goal where they refused to give the ball back to their opponents.
We remembered when, back during the 1998/99 season, Arsenal and Sheffield United replayed their FA Cup tie when Marc Overmars scored one of the most controversial goals in football history.
To compound Ranieri's mood, Juraj Kucka was shown a second yellow card for Watford as they fell to another defeat. That loss leaves them in 17th place, just above the relegation zone.
As for Arsenal, they've now moved up to fifth in the table as they continued their fine form. They're just six points off Chelsea in 1st.
