Journalist Luke Hatfield reckons that American striker Daryl Dike is "exactly" what West Brom need right now.

Dike, who's scored 26 goals in his career in both the Championship and the MLS, first came to the attention of English football when he helped Barnsley reach the play-offs last season having signed on loan from Orlando City in February.

The 21-year-old was signed by former Tykes boss and current Baggies manager Valerien Ismael.

And according to the Express and Star, Ismael was keen on signing the USA international once again in the summer, although he ended up staying with Orlando.

What do the stats say about Dike?

Having only recently turned 21, Dike is still a baby in terms of experience, but his goal record is already admirable.

Last season, he scored eight goals and added three assists in 17 MLS games and has continued where he left off in 2021, finding the net nine times in the same number of appearances.

Of late, Dike, valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, has been in blistering form, scoring in six of his last eight matches, although his form in front of goal won't come as much surprise to Barnsley fans.

During his brief loan spell at Oakwell, Dike scored nine goals in under half a season, helping the Tykes defy the odds and finish in the top-six.

Barnsley weren't able to go one better and get promoted, but Dike clearly did enough for Ismael to want to bring him to the Hawthorns.

Hatfield also reckons that striker would be a good fit for West Brom.

What did Hatfield say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Daryl Dike is a name that is forever linked with them, I think he's exactly the type of player they need."

Do West Brom need Dike?

Ismael has several attacking options at his disposal, but none with the physical presence of Dike.

Jordan Hugill, Callum Robinson and Karlan Grant have shared the number nine position this season, but none of those three have been able to nail down that position, with Hugill scoring just once in 11 appearances since joining on loan from Norwich.

Grant has been in excellent form of late and is the club's top scorer, but the majority of his good recent performances have come from the left, whilst Matt Phillips looks to be Ismael's first-choice on the opposite side.

With that in mind, were Dike to come in and perform similarly to last season, the Baggies could be a dangerous outfit during the second-half of the campaign.
